The Purpose of the EAS Program:
The University of Utah's EAS classes are designed to help non-native English speakers improve their ability to communicate in English. This is done through working on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills both in classroom settings and through one-on-one interaction with native English speakers. Our classes improve student performance in their General Education and major classes by:
- Teaching student how to improve their listening and note-taking skills
- Helping students to write essays and reports on a college level
- Providing students with opportunities to work and interact with native speakers both in and out of class
- Helping students improve their pronunciation and intelligibility
- Providing students with cultural and historical information to help them navigate through their experiences and interactions in the U.S.
Our classes are available to all international students and regular students enrolled at the University of Utah.
Is the EAS Program Right for You?
- We do not offer any degrees or certificates in EAS. Our classes are intended to help students seeking a degree from the University of Utah improve their English.
- Our EAS program is not intended for students wishing to teach ESL. If you wish to teach ESL abroad, please click here for more information. If you wish to teach ESL in the U.S. public school system, please contact the College of Education.
- You must be enrolled at the University of Utah to take our for credit courses.
- The EAS program offers courses that are not for credit in a partnership with Continuing Education.
- If you're interested in improving your English and are not seeking a degree from the University of Utah, check out the English Language Institute. ELI provides an academically-based curriculum for international students and members of the local community and university.
EAS Writing Courses
The EAS writing classes help fulfill the University Writing requirement. EAS 1040 is similar to WRTG 1010. EAS 1050 and 1060 are two halves of WRTG 2010.
EAS 1050 +1060 = WRTG 2010
The major difference between EAS and WRTG is that EAS is designed to help English learners improve their English writing skills, and WRTG is designed for native English speakers.
You are welcome to fulfill your University Writing requirement with either EAS or WRTG. To fulfill the university writing requirement with EAS courses students must take the EAS writing placement exam. Students may take this exam during International student orientation or at the Testing Center. Please schedule an appointment with the Testing Center to take the EAS Writing Placement exam. The EAS Writing Placement Exam score is valid for 1 year.
