Tavish Hathale

Linguistics Department Scholarship Recipient

"I was raised in a small town called Moab. From small town Moab to Salt Lake City, the transition was stressful. Before moving to Salt Lake, my undergraduate career began at Snow College where I was introduced to the field of linguistics. During my sophomore year, one of my favorite professors in the ESL department gave me the opportunity to teach and tutor a few ESL classrooms. It was a great experience and it's what sparked my interest in Linguistics. After graduating from Snow College, I immediately transferred over to The University of Utah where I am currently a senior and pursuing my B.A. in Linguistics."

What is something you did not expect form this major?

One thing I did not expect from this program is the amount of opportunities available. There are so many opportunities to get you started.

What is your favorite linguistics field of study?

My favorite field of linguistics is Syntax. Seeing the differences in languages being displayed is what I find interesting about Syntax. Also, it’s the one field I’m good at.

What are you hoping to do with your degree in linguistics?

With my degree in linguistics, I want to teach ESL overseas to get the full experience. Traveling abroad and teaching English will hopefully lead to other careers.

What are some of your hobbies?

In my free time, I love to play 9-ball. It’s a hobby I want to take seriously in the future. I just recently purchased a nice cue but I haven't yet had the time to use it.

What is your favorite food?

Right now I’m really into Mughlai Chicken Biryani.
