Abstract
Multimedia - or 'interactive multimedia' - is important for language documentation and revitalisation, not only as a genre of materials that are compelling, authentic, and effective for language teaching and learning, but also because the mindsets and skillsets associated with creating multimedia are precisely those needed to steer the practice of documentary linguistics in much-needed directions. While multimedia products can be created by repurposing existing documentation materials, the advantages of multimedia approaches lend themselves naturally to language documentation, so it would be good to see more documentation activity aimed at creating innovative multimedia products. In this presentation I will discuss these issues, describe my experiences in making multimedia in collaboration with endangered languages communities, and demonstrate some of the outcomes.
